Glacial Erratics and Other Rocks:

Photographs from Penobscot Bay

The rocks pictured in this series are found in Penobscot Bay off the coast of Maine. Some of these rocks were moved by glaciers over great periods of time and exist now in woods, in water or on beaches among stones. In response to this geologic process, I have photographed these rocks and boulders as isolated objects in the landscape. The scale and location are intentionally ambiguous, engaging the imagination and allowing for exploration within the image. The questions and curiosity evoked by these images reflect my experience of the island landscape: the urge to explore, the need for orientation, and the desire to return time after time. Through these photographs, perhaps others may occupy the spaces on the ledge, the gaps in the rock.
